Then this article is for you. Academic success is achievable I tell you, and as you read on, I hope you get inspired.
1. THE ‘GOD FACTOR’
If you’re ever going to be anything at all in life p, without God it’s impossible. While in school, you’ll face a lot of challenges. You may be experiencing one now. Lecturers are unpredictable. They can make or mar a person’s degree. Some supervisors are dogmatic and unbearable. Some courses are a bit difficult. You need God’s help to succeed.,
2. KNOW YOUR STRENGTHS
Most people limit the definition of strength to being ‘physically strong’ but its just not limited yo that alone. Strength is the quality of being ‘brave and determined to succeed’ in any given situation. You can channel your strength outwards, through your abilities. Hence, your quality or ability that gives you an advantage over others (compared to other abilities you possess) is a valuable asset to you. Every student has strengths, but a lot of us fail to consolidate on them. In the academic environment, there is a need to identify one’s strengths. knowing and consolidating on them makes school work easier. When you know your strengths, you can target excellent grades. They notify you of and help you to build on your weak areas, by providing a starting point. When we don’t take advantage of our strong points, we put ourselves on the losing end of the rope.
3. EFFECTIVE NOTE TAKING:
God knows how many student completely ignore this point. Have you ever borrowed notes and they weren’t so helpful? Why do students prefer reading textbooks? Its due to the poor system of note taking applied by most students in tertiary institutions. Effective note taking leads to superb note making. In secondary school, teachers try to foster this technique by dictating notes and giving note making (forming) assignments. Always be attentive during lectures. Try to recognize main ideas. Be organised. Emphasize important points. Stick to these, and you’ll start seeing improvements.
4. BE POSITIVE
Positivity is crucial. You need to maintain a positive attitude and a productive mind set, if you are going to achieve good grades. In school, lecturers will not always come to class, especially for 100l fresher’s. You need a positive mind with a determined mindset to stay focused, while keeping frustration at bay. You need to stay positive, when pessimistic friends or classmates try to talk you out of your goals. Don’t let anyone derail your focus. Maintaining a positive mind requires conscious effort on the part of any student. If you don’t work towards it, and you are expecting results, then you’d be shooting yourself in the foot. A positive mindset will help you foster resilence.
5. BE RESILIENT
Resilience is the ability to withstand challenges without breaking down. So many challenges lie ahead in one’s life, and academics is not left out. The ‘Stress Factor’ is a major challenge university students face a lot. Most Nigerian Universities are full of stress. Most times, both students and lecturers are under stress, but students can’t easily get away from it. Hence, there is a need for you to learn how to cope with stress, while in school. Other challenges can come from within yourself (self imposed) or from your environment. Resilience is a key factor here, and the good news is that you get better while working on it.
6. CONSISTENCY
Consistency is a grossly under emphasized aspect of academics. Most people wonder why some group of students excel, and we are quick to assume that they are lucky. Heredity plays a part of it,but consistency is KEY to academic progress. CONSISTENCY means something that occurs regularly, and is of a dependable nature. When you bring consistency to school work, it becomes much easier. Every person is born with the same number of brain cells, so refine your thinking because you can do it to. If someone reads two or three hours a day, he or she is better than another person who reads six hours a day, once a week. Be consistent. When its time to read, read. When its time to have fun, please do.
7. PROCRASTINATION
Procrastination means delaying something you should do, giving unjustifiable excuses that are irrelevant, because you don’t want to do it. Its a big problem, that virtually almost everybody is battling with. Procrastination kills academic excellence. When you ought to do something e.g assignment or some reading or study session, pray, etc and you keep postponing them, chances are youre never going to do them. If you end up doing them, they will probably be poorly done, and you wont like the results yo see. Reading in particular requires devotion. If you want to efficient in your school and post school (work, family) life, you need to tackle procrastination an in order to successfully do this, you need to put in conscious effort. Doing stuff at the right time, may mean the difference between an ‘A’ and an ‘F’.
8. SET SPECIFIC GOALS
If you really want to make a difference in life, you need to set specific goals. Goal setting is also applicable to academic contexts. As a student in school, you need to set specific goals that serve as a guide to help you achieve success. Your goals should be specific. A clumsy set up can hinder your progress. Set ‘actionable’ goals. Avoid an ‘I will do’ attitude. Be a student of action. Make sure your goals are realistic. Dare yourself. Decide what grades you want to have in each course at the beginning of the semester, work towards your goals during the semester, so you can smile at the end of the semester.
9. PROPER STUDY TECHNIQUES
A lot of factors affect effective learning, but this issue in particular is very important. Studying is an integral part of learning. You see, you may understand a given context or lectures or a course, but effective studying can mean the difference of getting a B and pushing it up to an A. It helps you to build your CPGA, because the consistency factor of an effective study technique helps a lot. Study techniques have a general standard, but their application is usually modified from individual to individual. This means that you need to use a technique that suits you. Don’t copy others unnecessarily. Study yourself, and make sure you are consistent.
10. TAKE TIME TO RECOVER
School work is tedious and full of stress. You have to take breaks occasionally. Everybody has a breaking point. Know your limit. Recovery is good for your overall health. The brain has a saturation point, beyond which information overload occurs. This is particularly bad, because you may end up forgetting everything you read. Eat well. Students are always on a budget, but try to balance nutrition. Occasionally give yourself play time. University is not just for learning bookwork alone. Relationship of different kinds are built and nurtured. Have a friendly attitude.
