Woman kills self after son, 11, steals her money

A 45-year-old woman from Mugai Village in Malava, Kakamega County, Kenya on Tuesday, December 17, killed herself after her 11-year-old son allegedly stole her Ksh500.

Hanna Mukangai allegedly took poison after she found the money missing from her wardrobe, and immediately suspected that her last-born child was behind the theft.

Upon asking the boy and his elder siblings who had stolen her money, Mukangai did not receive a response confirming her suspicion. When she stepped out of the house and returned later, she found the money had been placed where it had been stolen from.

Mukangai is said to have taken the money, left the house and went to a nearby shopping centre where she bought pesticide, which she took upon arriving home.

The deceased’s widower, Mulunda Mukangai, said his spouse often complained about their children being “unruly, notorious and disrespectful”.

Mulunda said their sons’ behaviour “pushed my wife to her death”.

Hanna’s body was taken to Kakamega County Referral Hospital morgue.
